That evening, Geoff and Mark drove the short distance to Mark’s parents’ house in the inner western Sydney suburb of Canterbury, as they planned to stay the night before driving back to Wagga in the morning. Geoff suggested a drink at the local RSL, so they headed there for a beer. Once there, Mark realised he didn’t have any money, as he’d rushed straight from home to the accident scene and hadn’t had time to get his wallet. As luck had it, Geoff had grabbed a $50 note before leaving home and had shoved it into his overalls pocket. He dug deep and found the note, but quickly realised it was soiled with body fluids, and God knows what else, from the scene and from the morgue. It was far too dirty to use.

‘We can’t use this!’ Geoff exclaimed. ‘We’ll have to wash it. It’s filthy.’

Mark peered at the dirty note as the two men discussed what to do. They then walked the short distance to the men’s toilet, where Geoff placed the note in soapy water in the hand basin and scrubbed it clean. Afterwards, they held it under the hand drier until it was dry. Each time someone entered, they’d turn their backs and hide the note from view, and got more than a few funny looks in the process. Once it was dry, Geoff commented that the note was a ‘stiff fifty’. They couldn’t help but laugh as they realised the irony of the situation. The previous twenty-four hours had been hell on earth; all they wanted was a beer and even that seemed an arduous task.

At the bar, Geoff placed the $50 note on the bench and ordered two beers. While they waited to be served, the note curled around the edges into a stiffened form unlike anything they’d seen before. As the barman picked up the note, he gave Geoff a weird look but didn’t say a word.
